Capacity building and training

Many businesses struggle to understand and/or resource effectively in order to address human rights challenges in their businesses. We help businesses to develop the knowledge and tools to adequately understand, address and mitigate human rights impacts they may cause, contribute to or be linked to through their operations and supply chains.

Emily has done this is various ways, such as becoming an integral part of your team (as a consultant) in order to understand how your business operates and support your business from within or through a training and guidance development. Training can be developed and delivered to the needs of your business and people, and can cover various topics such as:

  • Modern slavery

  • Labour rights

  • Human Rights and Business introduction or advanced

  • Responsible sourcing

  • Topic focused: children’s rights, child labour, land rights, agriculture, manufacturing

Research and due diligence

We can undertake research within your operations and supply chains providing you with insight into your challenges and opportunities. Research can also be sector, country or product specific depending on your requirements.

Our approach is aligned with the UNGPs and can support your business to undertake human rights due diligence to assess its impacts in various ways such as risk assessments (desk-based and with stakeholder engagement) and Human Rights Impact Assessments (HRIAs).

Human Rights Impact Assessments (HRIA)

A Human Rights Impact Assessment is a process for systematically identifying, understanding, assessing and addressing the actual and potential human rights impacts of business operations and supply chains. HRIA’s are rooted in the reality of a business’ actual operations and any potential impacts that may occur. They allow a business to truly understand what is going on its in own operations rather than assuming risks outlined by other businesses or NGO’s or perhaps tackling issues from a top-line perspective and country level. HRIA’s allow a business to collect more detailed information, understand its actual operating context and because it involves direct engagement with stakeholders it allows a business to take more effective measures and use it resources in the most efficient way. It helps stakeholders feel listened to and respected, as part of this process we recommend providing adequate feedback to stakeholders involved in the HRIA about actions being taken. Our HRIA methodology is aligned with the UNGPs, which provide clarity about how companies can meet their responsibility to respect human rights.
